Earlier, when Mitra departed Jibin, the spirit king Kapila escorted and protected him until they reached Kucha. Mid-journey, wishing to turn back, the spirit manifested his form to bid farewell to Mitra, saying, "Your supernatural power penetrates and transforms; you wander freely. I shall not accompany you to go south together." Having finished speaking, he withdrew his shadow and disappeared. Yet he followed from afar all the way to the capital, and his image was painted on the wall of the Upper Temple; down to the present, there are still verifications of his voice and shadow, and when one seeks blessings with pure sincerity, none fail to have their wishes fulfilled. On the sixth day of the seventh month in the nineteenth year of the Yuanjia reign-era, [Mitra] passed away at the Upper Temple, at the age of eighty-seven. Monastics, laity, and the fourfold assembly walked and wept as they hurried along; he was buried in front of Songxi Temple on Mount Zhong.
