Later, he arrived in Madhyadeśa. In the city of Pāṭaliputra in Magadha, at the Heavenly King Monastery south of King Aśoka's stupa, he obtained the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, and also obtained the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya extracts, the Za apitan xin, the Xian jing, the Fangdeng nihuan jing, and other texts. Faxian stayed for three years, studying the Sanskrit language and Sanskrit script, and then personally copied them out. Thereupon, carrying the sūtras and images, he took passage with merchants and arrived in the Lion Kingdom. Of Faxian's ten or so companions, some had remained behind and some had died; looking at his shadow, he was all alone, constantly harbouring grief and lamentation. Suddenly, before a jade image, he saw a merchant make an offering of a white silk round fan from the Jin lands, and unwittingly wept mournful tears. He stayed for two years and further obtained the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, the Dīrgha-āgama, the Saṃyukta-āgama, and the text of the Kṣudraka-piṭaka, all of which did not exist in the land of Han.
