Zhu Qian, whose courtesy name was Fashen, was surnamed Wang and was a native of Langye; he was the younger brother of Dun, Duke of Wuchang Commandery and Chancellor of the Jin dynasty. At the age of eighteen he underwent pravrajyā, serving Liu Yuanzhen of the Central Region as his teacher. Yuanzhen early on enjoyed a reputation for talent and understanding; therefore Sun Chuo's eulogy says: / "Aloof with an empty bosom, / Placid, untroubled, and profound, / Who has embodied this? / It is our Lord Liu! / His discourse was capable of elegant ornamentation, / His illumination sufficient to open the ignorant; / Within his embrace, / All was always vast and harmonious." / After Qian submitted to him, he pruned away superficialities, venerated the root, and applied himself to learning; by subtle words he initiated transformation, and his reputation permeated the Western Court, his bearing and countenance being magnificent and imposing.
