Yu Falan was a native of Gaoyang. From his youth, he had an extraordinary disposition. At the age of fifteen, he left home [for the Buddhist life] and made diligent application his work, studying and chanting the scriptures by day and by night, always being the foremost among the crowd in seeking the Dharma and inquiring about the Way. By the time he reached the age of capping, his presence was remarkably refined; his renown in the Way shook the Three River regions, and his fame spread far and wide. By nature, he loved mountains and springs, and mostly dwelled among cliffs and ravines. Once, during a winter month in the mountains when the ice and snow were severe, a tiger came into Lan's room; Lan's expression remained undisturbed, and the tiger was exceedingly tame, departing only the next morning when the snow ceased. The mountain deities frequently came to receive the Dharma from him; his virtue affected spirits and creatures in such manner.
