Kang Sengyuan was originally a native of the Western Regions, born in Chang'an. Though his appearance was that of an Indian, his speech was truly that of the central state. His deportment was dignified and upright, and his resolve and vocation were vast and profound. He recited the two Prajñāpāramitā sūtras, the Fangguang and the Daoxing—that is, the Larger and Smaller texts. During the reign of Emperor Cheng of the Jin, he crossed the Yangtze together with Kang Fachang, Zhi Mindu, and others.
