Dao'an remained at Fan-Mian for fifteen years, lecturing on the *Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra* twice every year without ever failing. Emperor Xiaowu of Jin, admiring his character from afar, sent envoys to convey his regards, and issued an edict saying: "Dharma Master Dao'an's capacity and knowledge are comprehensive and penetrating, and his demeanor is lofty and luminous. Abiding in the Way, he instructs the laity, his admirable achievements being prominent in both. Not only does he seek to save the present age, but he will also foster and ferry across future generations. His provisions and stipend shall be equal to those of princes and dukes, to be provided by the local authorities wherever he resides." At that time, Fu Jian had also long heard of Dao'an's fame and frequently said: "In Xiangyang there is Shi Dao'an, an extraordinary talent. I intend to bring him here to assist my person." Later, he sent Fu Pi to attack Xiangyang in the south, and both Dao'an and Zhu Xu were captured by Jian. Jian said to the Vice-Director Quan Yi: "With an army of a hundred thousand I took Xiangyang, yet I only obtained a man and a half." Yi asked: "Who are they?" Jian said: "Master Dao'an is one man, and Xi Zuochi is half a man." After arriving, he resided at the Wuchong Temple in Chang'an, where the assembly numbered several thousands, and he propagated the Dharma transformation extensively. Earlier, śramaṇas in the Wei and Jin took the surnames of their teachers, so their surnames were all different. Dao'an believed that among all origins of the Great Master, none is more revered than Śākya; hence, he took Shi as his surname. Later, when the *Ekottarika-āgama* was obtained, it indeed stated that when the four rivers enter the ocean, they no longer retain their names as rivers, and when people of the four castes become śramaṇas, they are all called the Śākya clan. Since this matched the scripture in advance, it became a permanent model.
