Shi Huiqian, surnamed Huangfu, was a man of Beidi. He entered the monastic life at a young age, observed the moral precepts, and was firm and resolute in his aims and conduct; he rested on Mount Lu for more than ten years. Among monastics and laypeople who devoted their aims to the superior path, none failed to admire his demeanor. When Kumārajīva newly translated various sūtras, Qian resolved to expound and illuminate them, propagating the virtuous teachings. Considering that Master Huiyuan was on the mountain and fully able to revive the profound teachings, Qian travelled east through Wu and Yue, seeking places to propagate them. At the beginning of the Yixi era of the Jin, he stayed at Jiaxiang Temple in Shanyin. Subduing himself to guide beings and toiling his body to lead the community, he copied and lectured on all the new sūtras. Nearly five years passed when he suddenly fell ill. After lying sick for a short time, he knew that his end was near, so he directed his thoughts toward the Realm of Peace and Nurture and prayed with utmost sincerity to Avalokiteśvara.
