Earlier, when scriptures circulated east of the Yangtze, many were incomplete; methods of dhyāna were unheard of, and the Vinayapiṭaka was fragmented and deficient. Huiyuan lamented these deficiencies in the Way, and so ordered his disciples Fajing, Faling, and others to search far and wide for scriptures. Crossing sands and snow, they returned only after many years, having acquired Sanskrit texts so that they could be translated and transmitted.
