Huiyuan replied, saying: "What is meant by the name 'śramaṇa'? It refers to one who can awaken the profound darkness of worldly customs and open the mysterious path beyond secular transformation, who is about to walk together with all under Heaven in the way of dual forgetting, causing those who aspire to the high to partake of their lingering wind, and those who rinse with streams to taste their remaining ford. If so, even if their great task is not yet accomplished, when one observes the traces of their transcendent steps, what they have realized is already vast. Furthermore, the kāṣāya is not attire for court audience, nor is the alms bowl a vessel for the imperial halls. Śramaṇas are people beyond the dust, and should not pay homage to the ruler."
