Earlier, Huiyuan had been skilled in composing texts; his phrasing and tone were pure and elegant, his discourse during gatherings concise and profound. In addition, his deportment was upright and dignified, and his demeanor natural and unconstrained; thus his portrait was painted in the monastery, where people from near and far looked up to it as a model. The treatises, prefaces, inscriptions, eulogies, poems, and letters he composed were collected into ten fascicles, comprising more than fifty pieces, and were held in high esteem by the world.
