Huichi later heard that Chengdu had fertile land and prosperous people, and resolved to go there to propagate the teaching, and also wished to view Mount Emei and shake his monk's staff amidst the peaks of Min. Thus in the third year of the Long'an era of the Jin (399 CE), he took leave of Huiyuan to enter Shu. Huiyuan bitterly tried to retain him, but could not stop him. Huiyuan sighed: 'Human life loves gathering; you alone delight in parting. Why is this?' Huichi also sorrowfully replied: 'If one were detained by the affections of worldly gathering, one ought not to have left home in the first place. Now having already severed desires to seek the Way, we look forward precisely to [meeting in] the Western Land.' Thereupon the brothers wiped away their tears and parted in sorrowful silence.
