Shi Sengji, whose origins are unknown. During the Taiyuan era of the Jin (376–396 CE), he came to Mount Lu and received instruction from the Venerable Yuan. Both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna scriptures as well as worldly classics, documents, and calculations were all thoroughly mastered in his mind, grasping their profound essentials. Just past the age of thirty, he went into the towns to deliver lectures, continuously serving as a leading master. Huiyuan often said to him: 'One who will propagate the Buddhadharma together with me—are you not that person!'
