At that time, there was the śramaṇa Huiyong, who lived at Xilin; as an old friend from the same school, he invited Yuan to reside with him. Yong said to the regional inspector Huan Yi: 'Master Yuan is now about to propagate the Way; his followers are already numerous, and more are arriving. The place where this poor monk dwells is cramped and small, insufficient for us to stay together—what should we do?' Huan thereupon built additional halls and residences for Yuan east of the mountain, which is Donglin Temple. In establishing this hermitage, Yuan thoroughly brought out the beauty of the mountain: with its back against Incense Burner Peak and flanked by the gorge of the waterfall, he used natural stones to build the foundation and pine wood for the structure; clear springs circled the steps, and white clouds filled the rooms. Within the temple, he also set up a separate dhyāna grove, where dense trees gathered mist and moss covered the stone mats; all who looked upon it or walked there felt their spirits cleared and their minds sobered.
