Shi Huirui was a native of Jizhou. He went forth from home at an early age; his adherence to moral discipline was refined and rigorous, and he often travelled to different regions to study. While travelling in the western border of Shu, he was seized by bandits and repeatedly made to herd sheep. A merchant of faithful devotion, seeing him and finding him extraordinary, suspected he was a śramaṇa and asked him about scriptural meaning; there was nothing he had not thoroughly mastered. The merchant thereupon ransomed him with gold. Having resumed the dyed garments, his dedication to learning grew even more intense. He travelled through various countries, even reaching the borders of South India. The translations of sounds and explanations of texts, the divergent meanings of different regions—there was nothing he failed to understand. Later, he returned to rest at Mount Lu. Soon after, he entered the Pass and sought instruction from Master [Kumāra]jīva. Later he went to the capital and stayed at Wuyi Temple. When he lectured on the various scriptures, his thought penetrated beyond words, and his reasoning accorded with the center of the circle.
