By the age of eighteen, he had read even more widely. He possessed a vigorous and courageous spirit, an outstanding intellectual acumen, a poised and refined demeanor, and an agreeable deportment. Sengrui saw him, marvelled at him, and asked, "What aspiration do you hold regarding the Buddhadharma?" Sengdao replied, "For now, I wish to serve as chief respondent (dujiang) for the Dharma Master." Sengrui said, "You are destined to become a Dharma master for tens of thousands of people; how could you be willing merely to assist an ordinary teacher?" By the time he received full ordination, his knowledge had become all the deeper; dhyāna, vinaya, sūtras, and śāstras were understood naturally in his mind. Yao Xing admired his virtue and deeds, treating him with love and friendship. When Yao Xing visited the temple, they returned to the palace in the same carriage. When the venerable [Kumāra]jīva translated the sūtras and treatises, Sengdao participated in the deliberations and editorial determinations. Since Sengdao possessed inherent spiritual distinction and also happened upon the grand gathering in the Guanzhong region, he consulted the various scriptures, broadly gathered the ultimate and conventional truths, and composed commentaries on the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra and the Three Treatises, as well as the Treatise on the Two Truths of Emptiness and Existence (Kongyou erdi lun) and other works.
