Shi Daowang, whose secular surname was Pan, was a native of Changle. As a youth, he accompanied his uncle to the capital, and at the age of thirteen, he joined Master Huiyuan at Mount Lu to become a monk. He thoroughly studied the sūtras and vinaya, was exceptionally skilled in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, and maintained a vegetarian diet for several decades. Once, while traveling through Liangzhou, he was surrounded on the road by Qiang bandits and was on the verge of losing his robes and alms bowl. Daowang and several disciples resolved their minds and recited the name of Avalokiteśvara together. Soon, they felt something like a cloud of fog envelop Daowang and the others. The band of thieves searched but could not see them, and thus they escaped. Later, hearing that Dharma Master Xuan'gao of Hejian possessed profound and vast dhyāna-wisdom, he wished to go study with him. En route, he encountered the disturbances of the Tuyuhun and was unable to proceed; he therefore returned to Chengdu.
