Having obtained this sūtra, Daosheng immediately began expounding it. On the gengzi day of the eleventh month in the winter of the eleventh year of the Yuanjia era of the Song (434 CE), he ascended the Dharma seat in the monastery on Mount Lu. His expression was bright and serene, his virtuous voice resounded brilliantly, and through several rounds of discourse and debate, he exhausted principle to its utmost subtlety. None among the listening audience failed to be enlightened and delighted. As the Dharma session was drawing to a close, they suddenly saw his deer-tail chowry drop loosely; sitting upright with a composed countenance, he leaned on his armrest and passed away, his complexion unchanged, as though he had entered meditative absorption. Monastics and laypeople were astonished and shaken; those near and far wept in grief. Thereupon the monks of the capital felt inner shame and remorse, and posthumously believed and submitted to him. Such was the auspicious sign of the culmination of his divine discernment. He was then buried on a knoll of Mount Lu.
