Shi Sengyuan, surnamed Huang, was a native of Chonghe in Bohai. His ancestors were of the Huangfu clan of Beidi, who fled hardship to the sea coast, and therefore dropped "fu" and kept "Huang". From his youth Yuan delighted in the Way. At the age of sixteen he wished to undergo pravrajyā, but his parents did not permit it. He therefore ate a vegetarian diet and continuously chanted repentance day and night, and only at the age of eighteen was he able to enter the Way. At that time there was the śramaṇa Daohui, of lofty talent and prominent virtue, whose fame covered the region of the sea and Mount Dai. Yuan studied under him, gaining a thorough understanding of the Abhidharma treatises and penetrating both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. During the Daming reign era of the Song, he crossed the Yangtze River and resided at Pengcheng Temple. In the Shengming reign era, he established a vihāra at Mount Niuluo in Little Danyang, naming it Longyuan.
