Later, the Western Regions Dharma master Saṃghavarman, who widely propagated dhyāna and vinaya, came to travel in the Song territory. Yi then instructed Ji to enter his chamber and serve him. Having reached the age of twenty, he went to Caizhou to receive the full precepts. Varman said to Ji: 'You are destined to rule the Dao in the region east of the Yangtze; you need not linger long in the capital.' Thereupon, over the course of four or five years, he traveled among the lecture assemblies, visiting all the various masters. He was skilled in such scriptures as the Aṣṭasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā (Xiaopin), Saddharmapuṇḍarīka, Viśeṣacintibrahmaparipṛcchā, Vimalakīrtinirdeśa, Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitā, and Śrīmālādevī-siṃhanāda. In all of them, he deeply contemplated their abstruse subtleties and clearly illuminated their hidden obscurities. In citing passages and pairing phrases, his eloquence was unmatched throughout the ages.
