When Wang Sengqian went out to take command of Xiangzhou, he took [Fa'an] along with him. Later [Fa'an] went south to Panyu, arriving just as Master You was lecturing on the Nirvāṇa-sūtra. Fa'an posed questions and engaged in debate for several rounds, until You felt ashamed and yielded his seat. He stayed there for two full years, conducting Dharma assemblies without interruption. During the Yongming reign period he returned to the capital and took up residence at Zhong Temple, lecturing on the Nirvāṇa-sūtra, the Vimalakīrti-sūtra, the Daśabhūmika, and the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra in unbroken succession. The Minister of Works King Wenxuan, as well as Zhang Rong, He Yin, Liu Hui, and Liu Huan, all accepted and adhered to his interpretations of the texts, together becoming his Dharma companions. In the first year of the Yongtai reign period he passed away at Zhong Temple, at the age of forty-five. He composed commentaries on the Vimalakīrti-sūtra and the Daśabhūmika, as well as Biographies of Monks in five fascicles.
