In the Directorate of Imperial Manufactories, there was a man who had an abdominal obstruction and was on the point of death. Jīvaka placed an alms bowl upon the patient's belly, covered it completely with white cloth, and recited incantations of several thousand words. Immediately a foul stench filled the entire room. The patient said, 'I will live!' Jīvaka ordered someone to lift the cloth; inside the bowl were several sheng of substance like dregs and silt, so foul that one could not approach it. The patient thereupon survived.
