After setting out, the monks escorted him as far as the city wall of Henan. Yu walked slowly, yet his pursuers could not catch up with him. Yu then drew on the ground with his staff, saying: "Here we part." On that very day, someone arriving from Chang'an saw Yu in a monastery there. Furthermore, a merchant named Hu Shideng met Yu at the shifting sands toward dusk on that very day, calculating that Yu had already traveled more than nine thousand li. After returning to the Western Regions, it is unknown where he ended his days.
