Śramaṇa Daozong had the secular surname Sun and was a native of Jimo in Laizhou. In his youth, he followed Master Daozhuang of Daozang Temple in Qingzhou, mastering both sūtras and śāstras. Zhuang possessed illuminating intelligence and discerning wisdom; his standing soared like rivers and seas, and his fame spread throughout the north and south. He established the doctrines of the four kinds of ālayavijñāna, the nature of understanding perfumed by hearing, the fruit of Buddhahood, and so on, as detailed in his separate biography. Zong received instruction in the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra, the Daśabhūmika, the Bodhisattvabhūmi, the Tattvasiddhi, and the Abhidharma, becoming vastly erudite in both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. Later, he resided at Youde Temple in his home prefecture; the temple had been established by Zong, and its rooms, halls, and gardens were completely dedicated to sūtras and śāstras. His fame was vast and powerful, revered by both monks and laity. When he lectured on the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra, heavenly flowers rained down, swirling around the lecture hall and drifting through the doorways; without falling to the ground, they vanished after a long time. The entire assembly was astonished, marvelling at this rare auspicious sign. Although Zong witnessed it directly, he did not find it strange at all; he carried on his lecture as before and never spoke of it again later. At that time, everyone submitted to his profound tolerance. Later, he resided at Huiri Temple, where eminent talents congregated, and he was esteemed as the most erudite. He frequently lectured on the Tattvasiddhi, leading and training younger students. The counterfeit Zheng regime revered him with abundant rites and inquiries; Shangqing and the eastern territories also admired his virtuous simplicity. He was summoned to the Western Capital to reside at Shengguang Temple, and was further invited into the Hongyi Palace. At Dharma gatherings that lasted through the night, lords and ministers all listened in submissive reverence; he expounded new and unique insights, inspiring the minds of the age. From then on, he continued uninterrupted in his rounds of lecturing. Although he held no major office, scholars looked up to him. In the sixth year of the Wude era, he died at his residence at the age of sixty-one. The Princely Court of Qin issued an order granting two hundred bolts of cloth, and gathered his remains to bury them at the south cliff of Zhixiang Temple on Mount Zhongnan.
