Shi Shiyu, whose lay surname was Chen, resided in Shizhou. His parents died early, and he took up hired labor to support himself. His physical stature was magnificent and stalwart, eight feet and three inches tall. Yearning for the Buddhist principle, he had no way to attain it on his own. In the twelfth year of Daye, he went to Dharmabhāṇaka Lun at Zhenxiang Monastery in Mianzhou and went forth from household life. Practicing the dhūta of eating a single meal, his diligence and hardship continued uninterrupted. He then went to Lizhou to register and reside in a monastery. Later he entered Mount Xiangying in Mianzhu County, Yizhou, where he lived alone for many years. Four apes supplied him with mountain fruits and other foods. There was a faithful layman, born in his mother's family, who carried grain to deliver to him; astonished by the deep mountain, he found that Shiyu was constantly burning frankincense, aloeswood, and other incenses. Having descended halfway down the mountain, he saw two persons of exceedingly bluish complexion and rare appearance, carrying lotus flowers, sugarcanes, and taro upward, saying, "We are going to provide for the dhyāna master." During his three years of mountain dwelling, Shiyu consumed one shi and seven dou of rice. He performed the circumambulation at the six times of the day, using the cries of apes as his time markers. At first there was only one spring; later, three more springs gushed forth and flowed down. In the first year of Zhenguan, he dreamed that four dragons came and entered his mind and eyes; upon waking, he was greatly awakened to the cardinal tenet of the Three Treatises. He then went to the lectures of Dharmabhāṇaka Lingrui; the words and principles he heard were as though he had studied them of old, and he immediately expounded them in return. He then went to Mianzhou to reside at Dashi Monastery. On the eighth day of the fourth month in the nineteenth year, he went to Chongle Monastery and spoke of wishing to travel afar. Someone gave an analogy, saying, "Only this monastery is all directions." He therefore returned to his original room at Dashi; fragrance filled the room, and at the ground where he sat, three gold coins welled up. The entire assembly traced the scent, which came out from Shiyu's room, and saw him sitting in full lotus posture, his hand still holding a censer. The Prefect Liu Dewei rejoiced at what he had never heard of before, and constructed a niche to seat him; for three years he did not fall over. His age was sixty-three.
