20.73

釋解脫。姓邢。臺山夾川人。七歲出家。依投名匠。志在出道唯在禪思。遠近訪法無師不詣。復住五臺縣照果寺。隱五臺南佛光山寺四十餘年。今猶故堂十餘見在。山如佛光華彩甚盛。至夏大發昱人眼口。其側不遠有清涼山。山下清涼即文殊師利遊處之地也。有高行沙門曜者。年百六歲。自云。我年五十時。與解脫上人至中臺東南下三十里大孚靈鷲寺。請見文殊。行至花園北。遇一大德。形神慈遠。徐行東去。解脫頂禮發願。我時精神欣喜不暇諮清解脫云。已曾三度親見文殊。誡語云。汝自悔責。若切至必悟道也。便依言自咎。晝夜剋責心便安靜。又感諸佛見身說偈曰。

Shi Jietuo was surnamed Xing and was a native of Jiachuan on Mount Wutai. At the age of seven he left home, placing his trust in famous masters. His aspiration was in transcending the world, focused solely on dhyāna contemplation; visiting the Dharma far and wide, there was no master he did not approach. He later resided at Zhaoguo Temple in Wutai County, and lived in seclusion at Foguangshan Temple south of Wutai for over forty years; even now, ten-odd old halls remain. The mountain resembles the radiance of the Buddha, with great splendor; in summer it blazes forth brilliantly to the eyes and mouths of men. Not far to its side is Mount Qingliang; below the mountain, Qingliang is the place where Mañjuśrī roams. There was a śramaṇa of lofty conduct named Yao, one hundred and six years old, who said of himself: 'When I was fifty, I went with the Venerable Jietuo down thirty li southeast of the Central Peak to the Great Doushou Lingjiu Temple to pray to see Mañjuśrī. Walking to the north of the flower garden, we met a bhadanta whose form and spirit were compassionate and far-reaching, walking slowly eastward. Jietuo bowed his head in obeisance and made a vow; at that time my spirit was joyful and I had no time to consult him.' Jietuo said that he had already seen Mañjuśrī in person three times, who gave him admonitory words: 'Repent and reproach yourself; if you are earnest and utmost, you will surely awaken to the Way.' He then blamed himself according to these words, day and night overcoming and reproaching himself, and his mind became peaceful and quiet. Furthermore, he moved the Buddhas to manifest their bodies and speak a verse, saying:
