He then asked: "What is this quiescent extinction Dharma? How should one instruct people to make them understand it?" The Buddhas then vanished, and a voice in the air said: "Expedient wisdom is the lamp / that illuminates the realm of the mind; / if you wish to penetrate the true Dharma, / you will see nothing whatsoever." He thereupon guided those with affinity according to this method. Among the students on the mountain, seven to eight hundred came and went. From far in all directions people admired his style and provided provisions to support and protect him. For more than forty years he remained constantly at Foguang [Monastery]. He died during the Yonghui reign period (650–655). Today his holy remains are still preserved, sitting upright and motionless in meditation within a mountain cavern. Furthermore, five to six li south of Suopo Monastery, south of Mount Wutai, Dhyāna Master Puming sat alone in stillness practicing dhyāna sitting, seeking to behold Mañjuśrī and wishing to request the Dharma. A spirit person addressed him from the air: "You have not trained in spiritual powers. You can merely attain longevity. Take the medicine in front of the niche and ingest it, and you will be able to prolong your lifespan." Puming harbored doubts and could not decide. Later the voice addressed him again: "The medicine is named Changsong (spikenard). Why do you not ingest it? This medicine is non-toxic." Puming then followed these words and ingested it. He also informed his fellow monks, and then soared into the air and departed. That place is still extant today, within visual distance of Mount Heng. There was also a Monk-Dhyāna Master [Yao/Ming], who lived at Jianguo Monastery in Xiurong, Xinzhou. He would constantly sit in meditation and ingest herbs to the south of Laiwangren Mountain in Dingxiang. Approaching eighty years of age, both clergy and laity revered him, though they did not know into what Dharma his aspirations entered. Those who marveled at him called him "the Inconceivable Man." The mountain's numinous spring and Wangji Stone are still present today, and many pray there for blessings. During the Yonghui reign period, there was a man without eyes, coming from parts unknown, who played the pipa and recited the entire Lotus Sūtra. Facing Wangren Mountain, his hands plucking and his mouth chanting, he entertained this mountain; no one could fathom why.
