Dhyāna Master You of Daobao Monastery in Yizhou was a monk from Dian, surnamed Yang. For over forty years he diligently engaged in cantillation and recitation, without pausing day or night. On the wall of the courtyard behind his room, he painted a tableau of the nine contemplations of the foul. In the open he placed a rope couch, covered above with a palm-fiber quilt. During the day he followed the monastic assembly's routine; at night he slept on it. At first, he would emerge only once every full day to eat a meal; gradually this increased until he ate only once every seven days. The monks considered this ordinary and did not find it strange. Over twenty years passed in this manner. Suddenly, a month elapsed without his emerging, and as he kept no attendants, everyone deliberated and said that his not coming out was simply because he had entered samādhi, so they need not trouble themselves to look. Suddenly, one night of intense wind and rain, the corridor with the painted wall collapsed. In the morning, they went together to look; cautiously lifting the palm-fiber quilt, they saw nothing at all—only the rope couch and the sitting cushion remained.
