Śramaṇa Daomu was a native of Songzi. By nature, he loved the mountains and forests. When he first entered Mount Shen in Jingzhou intending to dwell in cliffside seclusion, swift thunder and violent winds shook the mountain and broke the trees, a divine serpent coiled around his seat, and a pack of tigers roared wildly. Mu's mind was tranquil and at peace, entirely free of external thoughts. After seven days in a single samādhi, the snake and tigers finally retreated. He then climbed the mountain to gaze into the distance. The mountain leaned against a deep ravine on the east and overlooked a deep river on the west; he resolved to spend the rest of his life there. The mountain god transformed his shape, apologized, and said, "I am Tian Boyu." He came to request the precepts. Once the ritual procedures were administered, all venomous creatures vanished into hiding, sacrifices ceased to offer rank and pungent meats, and prayers for rain brought clouds and rain in due season. Such guarding and attending happened repeatedly; this one example indicates the rest. He lived in the mountain for over thirty years, his renown reaching far and wide. Recluses and wanderers all turned to him to seek instruction: among śramaṇas were Sengzhan and Seng'an; among gentlemen of high standing were Liu Qiu and Che Zhui. When they discoursed together, his words were strictly accurate, never falling short of his reputation. King Xiao Yi of Xiangdong of the Liang, admiring his virtue, passed by and built a terrace where his tin staff had rested, erecting a stele recording his lineage; Emperor Jianwen composed a eulogy for it, and the stele was set atop the mountain peak. When Mu was approaching his end, he delighted in looking afar, so he walked up to the mountain summit and passed away at the age of seventy.
