Shi Hongman was surnamed Liang and was a native of Anding. In his lay life, at the age of fifteen, he contracted a seasonal epidemic, and both his feet became crippled and contracted. He constantly recited the Avalokiteśvara Sūtra for three years. Suddenly, a monk holding a water jar stood before him without speaking. Hongman asked, "Where does the Master come from?" He replied, "Because the dānapati constantly calls upon me, I have come." Hongman kowtowed and asked, "What past retribution of sin causes your disciple now to suffer this crippled contraction?" The monk said, "In your previous existence, you bound and restricted living beings; the lingering retribution has brought this upon you. You need only close your eyes, and I shall cure it for you." Hongman followed his words and closed his eyes; he only felt as if six or seven inches were pulled out from each of his two knees. When the tapping and manipulation ceased, he opened his eyes, intending to express his gratitude, but the monk's whereabouts were lost. He stood up and walked just as before. Hongman then realized it was Avalokiteśvara. From this, he made a sincere vow never to marry. Later, he suddenly attained mastery of dhyāna contemplation on his own, sitting peacefully without moving for as long as three or seven days. In the first year of Kaihuang [581], he cast off the mundane world to follow the Way, dwelling at Jiudu Monastery. During the Daye era mergers, he moved to reside at Fahai Monastery. In the thirteenth year of Zhenguan [639], he passed away at the age of eighty-three.
