釋智顯。住遼州護明寺。少出家。戒操貞峻立操耿介。勇銳居懷。聞川聞見莫不高賞。專務坐禪。人不知其所詣。隋末賊起。川原交陣相推不已。動經旬朔。顯於兩陣以道和通。往返彌時。俱隨和散。合郡同嘉。敬而重之。後與道俗十餘行值突厥。并被驅掠。顯遂隱身不見。後訪得問。云我念觀音不值賊。有同學在箕山守靜。獵者奪糧頓盡。顯遠知之使人送米。其通幽解網非可究也。而任吹虛舟無所拘礙。每有苦處輒往救拔。是知大悲攝濟隨方利生。雖行位殊倫。而心焉靡異。不測其終。

Śramaṇa Zhixian resided at Huming Temple in Liaozhou. He renounced the world in his youth; his adherence to the precepts was pure and austere, his conduct unbending and resolute, and he harboured bold courage within his heart. None of the people throughout the river valleys who heard of or saw him failed to esteem him highly. He was devoted exclusively to dhyāna sitting, and people did not know the heights of his attainment. At the end of the Sui dynasty, rebels arose, and opposing battle lines constantly pushed against one another across the plains, dragging on for months. Xian mediated between the two battle lines using the Dharma. Going back and forth for a long time, both sides followed his counsel and dispersed peacefully. The entire commandery rejoiced together, revering and esteeming him. Later, traveling with more than ten monastics and laypeople, he encountered the Tujue (Turks), and all were captured and herded away. Xian then made his body vanish and become unseen. When he was later found and questioned, he said, 'I was recollecting Avalokiteśvara, so I did not encounter the bandits.' He had a fellow student who kept stillness on Mount Ji; hunters seized all his provisions entirely. Xian knew of this from afar and sent someone with rice. His penetration of the unseen and unraveling of perplexities could not be fully investigated. He was like a hollow boat drifting at the mercy of the wind, without any hindrance. Wherever there was suffering, he would go to deliver and rescue them. From this we know that the deliverance of great compassion benefits sentient beings according to the place; though the stages of practice differ in rank, the mind does not differ at all. His end is unknown.
