Śramaṇa Sengyun: His origins are unknown. He was eloquent, clever, skilled in speech, and fully clear on both the Great and Small [Vehicles]. He esteemed fasting and lectures, constantly abiding [in the monastery]. In the Qi capital of Ye, where the Triratna flourished, Sengyun was famed. He resided at Baoming Temple, overseeing all affairs. On the fifteenth day of the fourth month, when the time came for the recitation of the precepts, the assembly gathered in the hall. Sengyun, occupying the head seat, announced to the assembly: 'The prātimokṣa is for preventing wrongdoings; every person has memorized it. Why trouble the assembly with hearing it repeatedly? We ought to have a monk establish a thesis so that the younger generation may be awakened.' In his forceful prestige at the time, none dared oppose him, and all went along with it. Until the end of the summer, the recitation of the precepts was continuously neglected. At dawn on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, as [the monks] were about to ascend the grass seats, Sengyun's whereabouts were lost. Because the new monastic age had not yet been conferred and the pravāraṇā would be neglected, the great assembly rushed out in turmoil in all directions to track him down. Around three li beside the temple, inside an ancient tomb, they found him. His entire body was streaming with blood, like places cut by knives. When they inquired about the cause, he said: 'There was a large man holding a three-foot broadsword who angrily and fiercely scolded, saying: "You altered the poṣadha and falsely substituted it with establishing a thesis!" He sliced my body with the blade, inflicting poisonous pain that was hard to endure.' They then took him back to the temple, where he repented with the utmost sincerity. Thereafter, for ten years he recited the precepts and held the poṣadha, taking the cantillation and recitation of the scriptures as his regular practice. On the day of his death, rare fragrance welcomed him, his countenance was undisturbed, and he passed away joyfully. People of the time praised how he had reformed within his lifetime and did not bring down the standard rules.
