Shi Huifeng, of unknown origins, lived at Qixia Temple. He listened to Master Quan's lectures on the Three Treatises (Mādhymaka), profoundly comprehending their tenets and grasping their ideas better than anyone else. His reputation spread far and wide, and he was praised and esteemed by the assembly. Master Quan often said: 'In the depth of understanding and reflective power, I cannot match Feng. Because of my old age, we may rely on each other for now.' Feng turned his mind toward the correct principle, while modeling his conduct upon the Vinaya rules. He withdrew in tranquility to the pine groves, eating only one meal a day. His garments were coarse and plain, and he possessed not an inch of accumulated property. His steps were stately and dignified, endowed with refined grace and bearing. Before leaving the capital, he concentrated on propagating the Ten-Recitation Vinaya (Sarvāstivāda-vinaya), praising and guiding former practices, so that his listeners gathered like a marketplace. Someone asked: 'Nowadays you study the Mahāyāna; why do you preach the Vinaya?' Feng said: 'This principle is not something you know. How could studying the true Dharma cause the Greater and Lesser [Vehicles] to oppose each other?' He passed away in the Tianjia era of the Chen dynasty, at the age of sixty. Approaching death, he told his younger fellow-monk Zhikun: 'The place to which I am going is distant, not something you know.' After his death, he bent one finger; when someone tried to straighten it, it curled back again. Those discussing it at the time thought he had attained the first fruit [of srotāpanna].
