Śramaṇa Daoduan was a native of Luzhou. He underwent pravrajyā and received full ordination, studying and examining the Vinayapiṭaka. In distinguishing between serious and minor offences, exemptions and prohibitions, and in establishing the fundamental guidelines, he was truly a master of the school. Later, he entered the capital and resided at Renfa Monastery, lecturing on and elucidating the Vinaya with unceasing mental vigor. His talent and conduct were outstanding, admired by later scholars. Moreover, he took an interest in regional dialects and Indic script and texts, leafing through palm leaves and understanding them thoroughly, grasping their profound significance. Diligently safeguarding the Dharma, he was meritorious in organizing and guiding others. In the middle of the Renshou era, an imperial decree commanded him to convey relics to Fanjing Monastery in his native prefecture. When he first entered the prefectural borders, the mountains were numerous and water was lacking. Suddenly, a miraculous spring welled up at the summit, and those who flowed there were not few; of old and chronic ailments, none failed to be cured upon drinking it. There was another spring which, if a sick person drank from it, immediately brought recovery; but if one swallowed wine or meat, the illness would violently recur, whereas if one carefully kept the precepts, it would be eliminated forever and health restored. Daoduan memorialised this matter to the throne and later returned to the capital monastery. Constantly delighting in grand exposition, he died at this monastery.
