Furthermore, there was the monk Xuanxiu of Suihua Temple in Huangzhou. By nature, his aspiration was to be pure, prudent, gentle, and respectful. He constantly recited the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra and often evoked miraculous signs, yet he never considered them extraordinary. Once, during a summer of sweltering heat, his companions were seeking the cool shade, and sent for Xiu to come, wishing to converse and laugh with him. When they arrived in front of his room, they saw only an imposing armed guard and extraordinarily large horses and men. Terrified, they returned to tell the others. Going together to look, it was just as before, with no difference. Moving around to the back door, the host was even more numerous. Looking up into the air, it was blocked without limit, most riding elephants and horses, with mixed kinds of ghosts and spirits. They then realized that this was his spiritual resonance. They left it alone and retreated. The next morning, they expressed their shame and apologized, and their socializing thereupon ceased. Xiu devoted himself exclusively to this practice, and passed away at the temple at the end of the Sui.
