Shi Daozong, whose clan name is unknown, was a native of Jiangling in Jingzhou. In his early years he left secular life and dwelt at Waguan Temple. His nature was sincere and upright; he did not strive for fame or competition. His ears did not listen astray, his mouth spoke no wild words; cultivating his person and keeping himself pure, his every move had measure. He studied sūtras and treatises across various schools without a constant master; all day long he lived among rolls of scripture alone. His pure discussions and lofty debates made his listeners forget fatigue. His clothes were coarse and worn, his food frugal and sparse. Encountering years of famine, he could not obtain enough even by begging in the villages. He traveled south to the Lingbiao region, where his Way flourished greatly. Pledging himself even unto death, he never ceased guiding and transforming others. At the age of over fifty, he died in that land. There was also Fachang, who lived at Yanxian Temple. In his youth he examined scriptural numbers, and in maturity he lectured often. During the lean years at the end of the Qi, he held fast to poverty, maintained his integrity with pure penury, and did not compete in worldly pursuits or hoard possessions. In the early Tianjian reign, he traveled west to the Land of Abundance (Lu-hai) and returned east to the whole of Chu, achieving meritorious success in propagating and disseminating the Dharma.
