Shi Daoguang, surnamed Zhang, was a native of Bianzhou. From youth to maturity, he had pure aspirations and spotless deportment; wherever there were superior companions, he never failed to visit and study with them. He listened to and received the established teachings under the two masters Li and Shuo. By the time he reached thirty years of age, he was abundantly clear in the Vinayapiṭaka, and was revered for expounding doctrinal themes and chapters of meaning. Li sighed, saying, "The one to make our way flow through Hexi—is it not truly this man?" He also went to Dharma Master Yu's place to hear the Lotus and Daśabhūmika treatises, attaining a lofty mastery of the Supreme Vehicle, so that the profound principles, both expedient and real, were completely perspicuous to him. He then went to Mount Song to Dhyāna Master Xiang to study and practice śamatha and vipaśyanā; there he abandoned worldly afflictions, unbound by fame and profit. It happened that the Eastern Capital, with its abundant virtues, required a resident steward. Because Guang possessed longstanding virtue and eminent practice that could hardly be kept obscured, he was summoned by imperial decree to reside at Tiangong Monastery. Furthermore, because his transmission of the teachings was freshly accomplished, disciples gathered together, and the office of monastic administration cannot be passed on without the right man, he was additionally summoned to be the monastery's elder (sthavira). He pacified and nurtured the pure assembly, accomplishing order without harshness. Moreover, the sincerity of his universal benevolence was rarely matched throughout history. None among the Vinaya students of the four quarters failed to consult him. Thus, disciples arrived at his chamber shoulder to shoulder and heel to toe, and those whom he recommended and brought to fulfillment were followed and honored near and far. Vinaya Master Jundu of Ximing Monastery, of radiant and distinguished bearing, an outstanding talent of the era, was also one whom Guang advanced. Now, in the second year of the Linde era, his lectures and instruction of students in the Eastern Capital are admired and envied all the more.
