Śramaṇa Tansui was a native of Yongzhou. Initially he studied the Dàzhìdù lùn, and later savored Consciousness-Only, investigating the Mahāyānasaṃgraha and selecting its profound principles. He often said, 'The three realms are illusory; they are nothing but the single mind. Seeking external objects before awakening is hard to quell.' Therefore, his renown spread far and wide, earning widespread praise. Moreover, he carefully guarded the sense doors and diligently observed the disciplinary precepts. Residing at Zhenji Temple, he shut his doors and spurred his practice. In the middle of the Renshou era, an imperial decree ordered him to escort relics to Fahou Temple in Jinzhou. When he first halted at the official lodge, a great light radiated, illuminating the door of the vihāra as bright as gold. Yellow and white lights also emanated from the bodhimaṇḍa, extinguishing only after a long while. Furthermore, from the place of the relic palanquin to the pagoda foundation, auspicious lights were emitted: three streams like flying rainbows, their color like the morning glow, shining brightly across the sky. Inside the pagoda during the interment, light was also emitted, appearing and disappearing at times. In general, within seven days, wondrous omens occurred one after another without ceasing. Returning to the capital, he continued his religious vocation until the Tang dynasty, passing away at the age of over eighty.
