Śramaṇa Xuanjing was a native of Zhaozhou. He established his resolve with pure integrity and did not meddle with worldly customs. Thoroughly conversant with the text and meaning of the Four-Part Vinaya, he took no pleasure in public preaching; constantly investigating different schools, he stirred up agreements and disagreements, and his establishing and discarding of sections and chapters had divine brilliance. He resided at Kongguan Monastery, living in leisure and ease as a monk of non-action. In the second year of Renshou, an imperial decree ordered him to erect a stupa at Wuji Monastery in his native prefecture. On the day the foundation was laid, a red light was emitted, shifting inconstant forms, sometimes like an icon, suddenly resembling towers and pavilions. A white light also emerged, occasionally spitting out large and small [beams] that encircled the sides of the bottle. On the fourth day of the fourth month, it again emitted light, purple and green alternating, ceasing only after three times. Within the light was also seen an image of the Buddha, over two feet tall, seated on a lotus throne, accompanied by bodhisattvas standing in dignified flanking attendance. Starting from the hour of the rabbit, it only ceased at the hour of the rooster. At that time, everyone with eyes witnessed it. Jing returned to Kongguan and studied the Chan tradition again. Residing in the eastern courtyard, he gathered companions who mostly practiced dhūta, and he finally died at that monastery.
