At that time, there was Śramaṇa Huida of Taiyuan, who also chanted the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra more than five thousand times. In walking, sitting, and deportment, his voice never ceased. He cared especially for living creatures; looking straight ahead with lowered eyes, if there were insects on the ground, he would invariably turn his body to avoid them, not daring to step over them. When asked, he replied: 'They and I are impermanent in birth and death; who knows if they will not achieve right awakening before me? How could I lightly disregard them?' In the fourth month of the eighth year of the Zhenguan era [634 CE], he passed away seated in the full lotus posture. People thought he had entered samādhi, and kept him for five nights; since he seemed to have passed away, yet was not foul or putrid, they placed his entire couch inside a cave.
