Śramaṇa Yijing, courtesy name Wenming, was of the Zhang clan and a native of Fanyang. In his childhood, he bid farewell to his parents and shaved his hair. He consulted widely with famous masters and extensively probed the multitude of texts, becoming well-versed in both internal and external learning and broadly knowledgeable in both ancient and modern times. At the age of fifteen, the aspiration sprouted within him to travel to the Western Regions, admiring the noble conduct of Faxian and longing for the lofty character of Xuanzang. Furthermore, he was so diligent that he never wasted time, never laying aside his book. Upon coming of age, he received upasampadā, which strengthened his upright aspiration all the more.
