Śramaṇa Vajrabodhi, translated into Chinese as Jingangzhi, was a native of the realm of Malaya in South India, which means 'Radiance' in Chinese; his country's territory lay near Mount Potalaka, the palace of Avalokiteśvara. His father was a brāhmaṇa skilled in the treatises of the five sciences and served as preceptor to the King of Kāñcī. When Vajrabodhi was a few years old, he could recite ten thousand words a day; what met his eyes was transmitted to his mind, never to be forgotten for the rest of his life. At the age of sixteen, he attained awakening to Buddhist principles and took no pleasure in studying the treatises of the Nirgranthas; he therefore shaved his head, dyed his robes, and left household life—this was through the power of plantings from past lives. Later he followed his teacher to Nālandā Temple in Central India to study the sūtras, abhidharma, and other teachings. Upon receiving full ordination, he heard the vinaya of all eighteen schools. He then went to West India to study the treatises of the Hīnayāna, as well as Yoga, the three mysteries, and the gate of dhāraṇī. In over ten years, he was completely versed in the Tripiṭaka. Next, he traveled again to the Lion Kingdom (Siṃhala), climbed Mount Laṅkā, and journeyed east to more than twenty kingdoms including Śrīvijaya and the Country of Naked People. Hearing that the Buddha Dharma flourished in Cīna, he sailed aboard a ship and came; because of many hardships, it took several years before he arrived.
