In the twelfth month of the twenty-ninth year, he boarded a Kunlun merchant vessel and departed Nanhai. Reaching the borders of the kingdom of Heling, they encountered a great black tempest. The myriad merchants were terrified; each performed the apotropaic rituals of their own native lands, but with no effect. They all prostrated themselves, pleading for mercy and begging for deliverance and protection; Huibian and the others also wept bitterly. Amoghavajra said: 'I now possess a method; do not worry.' He then held a five-pronged bodhicitta vajra in his right hand and the text of the *Prajñā-buddhamātā Sūtra* in his left hand, and performing the ritual, he chanted the *Great Suiqiu* [dhāraṇī] once, whereupon the wind subsided and the sea became calm. Then they encountered a great whale emerging from the waters, spouting waves like mountains, worse than the preceding calamity. The merchants resigned themselves to death. Amoghavajra performed the ritual as before, ordering Huibian to recite the *Sāgara-nāgarāja Sūtra*; in moments, all the calamities were stilled.
