Amoghavajra's deeds of transforming and benefiting living beings were very numerous, and in the dhāraṇī-gate he was the most markedly superior; guessing his stage of forbearance, one cannot determine whether it was high or low. In the beginning, Xuanzong held him in especially high esteem. Once, because of a drought that year, he ordered Amoghavajra to pray for rain. Amoghavajra said: "Only after such-and-such day may we pray for it; if it is obtained by force, its violence will be alarming." An imperial edict requested his root master, Vajrabodhi, to set up an altar; indeed, the wind and rain did not cease, so that people in the wards and markets were washed away and drowned, and trees were uprooted and blown over. [The emperor] hastily decreed that Amoghavajra stop it. Amoghavajra kneaded five or six mud hags in the temple courtyard, rinsed them with water, and scolded them in Sanskrit words; after a short while, it cleared up.
