Moreover, on Mount Beimang there was an enormous serpent, which woodcutters often saw, raising its head like a hill, at night constantly taking in and inhaling dew vapors. Seeing Amoghavajra, it spoke in human words, saying: "This disciple suffers an evil retribution; how can the monk deliver me? I constantly wish to overflow the Yellow River to submerge Luoyang City to vent my heart's desire." Amoghavajra conferred upon it the refuges and precepts, explained cause and effect, and said: "Because of a wrathful mind you received this present [body]; how can you harbor anger and hatred again? How could my power suffice? You must reflect upon my words, and you will surely cast off this body." Later, woodcutters saw the serpent dead in a ravine, its stench smelling for several miles.
