Shi Hengyue, surnamed Han, was a native of Shangdang. His father was a local salt merchant, traveling back and forth across Xijiang, who was suddenly plundered and drowned. Though Yue was young and weak, he lamented that his father was buried in the bellies of fish and that his mother had remarried; thus he resolved to leave home (pravrajyā) to repay the debt of their upbringing. He received instruction under Huichu of Shengshan Temple. After receiving ordination, he went to the Chan gathering on Mount Song, where the essentials of mind were immediately awakened. Later he visited masters and sought the Way without fear of ease or danger, arriving at an ancient cloister beneath the Cuiwei Cliff of Mount Wanghu to hang up his staff. Students from the four quarters gathered like bees around their queen, and his converting influence flourished immensely. In the first year of the Jianzhong era, he manifested illness and died at the age of seventy-nine. On the twelfth day of the third month of that year, his stūpa was relocated. Shi Zhenliang of Guang'ai Temple in the Western Capital was surnamed Hou and was a native of Jingcheng. His family was schooled in Confucian elegance, and his literary expressions were brilliant. Pure and upright in his conduct, he was distinct from ordinary youths. Suddenly weary of the worldly cage, he said: 'To eliminate passions and eradicate spiritual famine is my wish.' Thereupon he donned the dyed robes under Master Zhixiu of Kaiyuan Temple in his home prefecture. He led others in cutting firewood and drawing water, practicing the dhūta austerities. After receiving full ordination (upasampadā), he traveled to Mount Song and Mount Shaoshi, meeting Puji, whose encouragement and guidance instantly dispelled his ignorance. He entered Mount Longmen, dwelling in Chan stillness; those seeking the path gathered in droves, and his renown grew daily. It happened that the Defender-in-Chief, Minister Wang Duo, was in charge of safeguarding the region; hearing of him, he paid homage with reverence and summoned him into Guang'ai Temple to reside in a separate quarter. He instructed people in Chan contemplation, never tiring of teaching, and those who attained the Way were many. On the third day of the eleventh month in the fourth year of the Zhenyuan era, he suddenly informed his disciples that the setting sun's fading rays could not linger long. Giving his final instructions, he passed away at the age of eighty-eight.
