Shi Venerable Si, surnamed Li, was a native of Hengyang. He left home early at Longxing Temple in his home prefecture. After receiving ordination, he traveled through the Yi and Luo rivers area, visiting Chan Master Puji, who unfolded the Chan teachings for him. When Puji first guided and led him, he immediately penetrated to the profound depths. Arriving at Nanyong, he secluded himself on Mount Jiashi, dwelling at ease. When Duke Niu was governing the Hannan region, he heard of his reputation and invited him to enter the city; Si declined on grounds of illness and did not comply with the order. Commander Niu did not force him against his will, and offerings from donors followed one after another. Students gathered in crowds, as if encircling sandalwood. In the first year of the Xingyuan era, he manifested illness and passed into extinction at the age of eighty-four. Shi Tanzhen of Anguo Cloister in Bozhou was surnamed Chen and was a native of Weiqing. In his youth he accompanied his father to Pengcheng to sell dates at an inn, and there lost his father. Grieving and without support, Zhen sought refuge at Dayun Temple in Xu to become a monk. That region followed the lineage of Dharma Master Song, an ocean of sūtras and treatises, which Zhen studied thoroughly. Later he toured renowned sites and entered Mount Song to study Chan contemplation. Arriving in Rencheng, he met by chance Vice Censor-in-Chief Li Feng, who was traveling to take up office in Qiao Prefecture; Li spoke with Zhen about the Way, clapping hands and gazing up, feeling as if parting clouds and mist. Li regretted meeting him so late and invited him to travel together. Often gathering at wind pavilions and moon-viewing belvederes, they discussed the Way until dawn. Later, when Li entered the capital as Mayor, he leisurely memorialized that Zhen's attainment in the Way and virtue were consummate. Emperor Dezong issued an imperial summons, but Zhen did not comply. In the fourth month of the seventh year of the Zhenyuan era, he manifested extinction, and his disciples built a stūpa for him.
