Shi Shizang, surnamed Lü, was a native of Handong. When he was near the age for primary schooling, he already displayed the bearing of a mature person; kneeling before his parents, he begged to become a son of the Buddha. Fulfilling his wish, he entered Kaiyuan Temple to shave his head and receive the precepts; he then vowed to pay homage to Chan Master Ji of Mount Song, thoroughly awakening to the Chan teaching. Arriving at a stone chamber among the Daxiang peaks in Zhongshan, he sat alone in dark silence, passing several summer retreats in equanimity. Those of like mind arrived as if drawn by the wind, gathering into a flourishing community. Transforming Boling, all people rejoiced and respected him. It happened that the prefectural commander, Duke Li Zhuo, deeply admired him and ordered him to enter the city to dwell, wishing to associate with him in profound discussions. Shizang declined, saying: 'My rustic nature is difficult to restrain, and unversed in court etiquette, I fear disgracing your awe-inspiring authority.' Zhuo climbed the mountain in person to visit him, conversing intimately, and his deep ignorance was dispelled. He then memorialized the throne to name the cloister Dingzhen. Shizang forewarned the assembly to bid farewell, and the next day he passed away while sitting, at the age of eighty-three. In the first month of the sixteenth year of the Zhenyuan era, his remains were placed in a stūpa, and a stele was erected praising his virtues.
