Śramaṇa Zhiman, whose lay surname was Kang, was a native of Luoyang. When he was young, his family hired the śramaṇa to hold a Buddhist gathering; Man was delighted and would not leave it, whereupon he went to Longxing Temple in Yingchuan to go forth from the household. Hearing of the flourishing Dharma seat of Chan Master Shenhui in Luoyang, he attained the essentials of the mind. Traveling south, he arrived at the location of the Lingtang Spring on Mount Huang, where he built a thatched hut and stayed. Later, while gathering Chinese goldthread (coptis), the locals were overjoyed to see Man. Man asked, "What place is this?" The locals said, "This is Mount Huanglian, belonging to Xuancheng. We wish the Master would abide here, but what can be done about the tigers and leopards that cause so much harm?" Man said, "Tigers also have the Buddha-nature." He then burned incense and said prayers to subdue them. From this they ceased, and it eventually became a great Chan monastery. Later he showed his demise at the age of ninety-one. In the first year of the Yongzhen reign era (805), he was interred in a stūpa.
