Śramaṇa Guangyao, whose lay surname was Zhou, was a native of Beijing (Taiyuan). In his youth he suffered the bitter grief of losing his parents and, overwhelmed with sorrow, swore a vow to go forth from the household. Abandoning the lecture halls, he entered the Chan groves; wherever there was a lineage master, he went to them seeking spiritual benefit. In the end he met Chan Master Shenhui, who removed the film over his eyes with a golden probe, allowing him to see clearly throughout the ten directions. Later he arrived at Mount Meng in Yishui, thatched grass to make a hut, and sat in serene contemplation. The people of Kuai and Fei followed his transformation in great numbers. At that time, the magistrate of Shen County deeply respected him and first established a Chan monastery for him; next, Minister Wang Liao, the Military Commissioner of Yanzhou, personally invited him into the prefecture to conduct conversions, memorializing the throne to bestow the placard name "Baozhen." Students flocked to him in great numbers, many receiving great benefit. In the second year of the Yuanhe reign era (807), he showed his demise at the age of ninety-two. Also, Śramaṇa Daojian of Ci'en Temple in Xiangzhou during the Tang had the lay surname Wang and was a native of Danyang. He first generated the aspiration for enlightenment under Chan Patriarch Huizhong of Mount Niutou. In the first year of the Dali reign era (766), he dwelt in seclusion on Mount Nanquan in Chizhou. Later he went to the Xiang and Han rivers and stayed at Ci'en Temple. In the beginning of the Yuanhe reign era, Chancellor Duke Yan, governing Hannan, deeply revered him, inquired diligently about the Way, and presented him with abundant offerings. Thereupon, outside the Fenglin Pass, he built a temple and invited him to dwell there. In the second year (807), he showed his demise at the age of seventy-three.
