Shi Yuanzhi's secular surname was Zhang, and he was a native of Haihun in Yuzhang. In the years of his youth with hair in tufts, he suddenly sought transcendence, paying respects to the Upādhyāya Niepan and personally carrying his water jar and shoes. Thereupon ascending the precept platform, he vowed to knock at the gate of dhyāna; meeting Yaoshan, his mind's doubts were resolved. Later he resided at Mount Daowu in Changsha, where assemblies as vast as the sea followed him, like bees and ants clinging to their queen. On the eleventh day of the ninth month in the yimao year, the ninth year of the Taihe era, he passed away at the age of sixty-seven. At his cremation, several fragments of bone that did not turn to ashes and a section of skull cap were found, remarkably distinct, pure, and translucent, its color like gold and its resonance like bronze. A stupa was then erected on Mount Shishuang, and an imperial decree bestowed the posthumous title Grand Master Xiuyi and named the stupa Baoxiang ('Precious Form'). The one who attained his Way was Puhui. When Zhi first realized Yaoshan's tenets, Master Yan instructed him: 'I have no precious jade or great bow to give as a parting gift, but now I bestow upon you a single loincloth. Though it may be called slight, does it not symbolize intimacy?' The monk Xuantai of Mount Nanyue composed a stele and eulogy for him.
